This will be a night to remember when 12,000 women and men pound the streets of Edinburgh in their decorated bras... it could also be the night that you take your first step to being fitter and healthier and making a difference to the lives of many. In 2008 we raised over £2.7 million... with your help we can make an even greater difference in 2009!

What is Walk the Walk...

You will find plenty of toilets and water on the route and a team of smiling faces giving out medals to welcome you home!

What you do for us...
You give us your commitment to get into training to prepare for the big night, and aim to raise a minimum of £100 to help us reach our ambitious goal of £3 million! We will be granting our funds where we know it can make a difference to support vital breast cancer causes in Scotland.

Read on about 2008!

With the sound of the 20 drums of Commotion, the 3rd MoonWalk Edinburgh opened on a glorious Scottish evening - "perfect MoonWalking weather" as Nina would and did say! The ladies from all over Scotland and as far away as Singapore came dressed to thrill in decorated bras covered in feathers, lights, pompoms and even a donkey!

Commotion..causing a...!

Music please!

On stage in the Pink Palace the sounds from our bands Rhumba Caliente and Callandish cooked up distincly celtic feel with a twist of latin - only at The MoonWalk. The queue for tattoos snaked around the tent and the ladies on balloons just could not keep up!

Our fabulous volunteers!

Nina told everyone about the grants being made to Maggies and The Breast Cancer Institute and our aim of the name to raise £3 million! A poignant minutes silence came to a wonderful close as The Pink Piper mixed the haunting sounds of the bagpipes into what can only be described as the most incredible version of We Will Rock You!

A moment to remember

Roy Gayle was on hand to take the starts through their warm ups and then they were off - 12,000 women and men pounding through the streets!

Raring to go!

With so many buildings lit up pink in their honour it was an wonderfully moving sight as the long chain of walkers wove their way through Edinburgh. The sunrise was magnificant (and so it should be) along the coast as the first walkers made their way across the finish line

A pink castle - now that's a sight and so is he!

Girls in the pink!

It was a truly special night and as we write walkers are still coming in. So a HUGE well done to everyone and a really BIG Walk the Walk hug to our volunteers - they really pulled the stops out.

And as Nina says...your task is to send in all your fundraising and to introduce just one new person to a Walk the Walk challenge! Now you've done it at night, come along with your familly and try it during the day in Newcastle!

Great costumes girls!

" Tthe paper's heading was right ... it really was a marvelous night for a moonwalk!!! Having completed The London Marathon and The London Moonwalk I was so excited about the challenge of completing The Edinburgh Moonwalk ... my third marathon in the space of 2 months ... and what a night!!!! I don't think I have ever seen a city look quite so stunning as Edinburgh looked on Saturday night!!! Walking along Princes Street was breathtaking ... with every step Adrian and I saw a new and beautiful view of the city and we walked past the big screen just as the minutes silence was being shown ... that was a little emotional to say the least!!! Yet again everything was amazing ... the volunteers ready with their smiles and hugs, the crowds that came to support ... even the scottish weather behaved itself!!! Well done and thank you so much Nina and everyone at WalktheWalk ... What you do is amazing!!!! See you next year!!! Zoe Orrin (and Adrian ... the one in the black kilt and pink polka dot bra ... hmmm, lovely!!) " Zoe Orrin

" Well I did it. But it has to be said that at 21 miles it was debatable. Let’s go back to the start though. Arriving at the big pink palace was exciting and we had a wander, got massages and then headed for some food and took the weight of our legs. After a toilet stop we then headed back and listed to Nina giving us all a pep talk – good advice given about the ponchos – they were fab. A moments silence for all those that could not be there – this was a really emotional time and the reality of what we were doing hit home. Anyway, after a great warm up, we were guided to the start line and we were off. What a bizarre sight seeing all these women walking through town in bras. What an amazing sight seeing the lights snaking up and round Arthurs seat. On we walked through the city, with marshals and crew encouraging us all the way – as well as a few worse for wear supporters. Heading out of the city centre the walkers thinned as the half marathon walkers left to wind their way home. Down to the seafront and it turned cold and the queue for the loos was long – way too long and way too far to the next set by then – having missed 2 already. However, got robed up with t shirts and fleeces and got going again. The sunrise was amazing over the Forth. On we walked, cheered on by friends who had got out of their beds at some ungodly hour to give some encouragement. Then it got hard!! There were a few moments for all in our team where we did think we would not make it but we buoyed each other up and kept going. Once into the park, the sun was out and we undressed again for the last 2 miles. Then, at last, a sign saying 500m. We were all crying by then with joy at what we had achieved and the tears did not stop until we got through the finishing line. We were so proud of ourselves for completing it and for raising over £1500 for the charity. To sum up my experience, we trained hard but nothing can prepare you for the combination of the distance and the fact that it through the night. I am proud if what I achieved but I will not repeat the full again. There again, I say to everyone go and give it a go. I will however, volunteer in future years. Without these people, I for one could not have got through it. They encouraged and supported all the way. Well done them. Even today I am still emotional at what I achieved and that will stay with me forever. " Louise Clapperton

Susan's story

Congratulations on another fantastic moonwalk in Edinburgh!

Hi Moonwalk team

Congratulations to you all for another fantastic Moonwalk in Edinburgh!  I’ve been involved for the last 3 years and it’s always such an amazing experience:

2006 - I did the ½ moonwalk on my own in memory of my Auntie Christine.  I wasn’t all that fit before I started so I got a wonderful personal trainer for a couple of months, which was fantastic preparation. It was incredibly uplifting and special being with all the other amazing walkers and hearing some of their stories.   I found it a very empowering experience, wandering about in my marvellous bra as I wasn’t at all confident about my self image and this experience really helped increase my self esteem.  The other walkers, marshals and crew were superb and really helped drive me on through the 13 miles. I made it in 3hrs 40 and raised heaps of money, which I was really chuffed with.

2007 – I was a crew member on a water station in the gorgeous big pink tent (which was great to keep out of the rain!).  Our team were superb and we worked very hard all night handing out water to all the walkers We had a really fun time and I thoroughly enjoyed the bands and the speeches and the whole atmosphere.

2008 - This year I was one of the clean team leaders - cleaning up the rubbish in the tent and recycling water bottles.  Again, the whole crew were excellent and we worked really really hard and did a Fantastic job.  Once more, the atmosphere was incredible and that kept us all going through the night.  (It was also great when I was walking home and see Edinburgh castle lit up pink!)

2009 – I’m not sure yet what I’ll do next year, but I’ll certainly get involved again in some way – I quite fancy going for the full 26 miles!

I’d really recommend anyone to get involved with walk the walk walking or volunteering.  It’s a fantastic, worth-while charity and an inspirational, special, unique experience.

Thanks and good luck raising Lots of money!!

" I would just like to say well done to Edinburgh and the moonwalk team for putting on another great night. This is the third moonwalk for my team and I, however when we started in 2006 we had five members of our team, all nurses working in Stirling Royal Infirmary. Nothing could prepare us for that first moonwalk, we could hardly walk after the finish but we do it 26.2 mile in eight and half hours. The 2007 moonwalk saw the team diminish to three members, but we were not put off by this and we had learnt allot form the first year, so we were well prepared. We managed to do the 26.2 miles in seven and half hours. This year 2008 was great we were allot fitter although yeah you guessed it our team was down to just two of us, but we managed to cut our time by another half hour and finished the marathon in six and half hours which was a great feat for the two of us. However the training we put in for this years walk was 30 to 40 miles a week, I do recommend if anyone is doing the moonwalk for the first time next year, you have to train hard, and all your hard work will pay off. I started to do the moonwalk because I had lost a few friends to breast cancer the year before, who were women in there forty's, and I have just heard that an old friend this year has stage three breast cancer. So for all women with breast cancer I dedicate all my moonwalks, and will continue to walk the walk every year to raise money for breast cancer. To date my team and I have raised just over Five Thousand Pounds, which I am very proud of. Hope to see all next year for the 2009 moonwalk Edinburgh. " Donna and Rosario

" Having tried to get a place last year and failing my friends and I were lucky enough to get a place this year. What a night was in store for us. It was a beautiful night in Edinburgh for Walking the Walk and boy did we all walk the walk. It was a very emotionally charged time for me in the pink tent having so recently lost my cousin Ann to breast cancer when Nina had us all hold hands and have a minutes silence then hug the person next to you what a wonderful thing to do. The walk itself was great and there was a real sense of silence strength as women (and men) of all ages, shapes and sizes determinedly walked the 26.2 or 13.1 miles to get their moonwalk medal (now my most prized piece of “bling”). I have woken this morning with sore muscles some skin missing from place a blister but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world. I would just like to thank my walking buddies Pauline and Margaret my cousin Julie and her friend Christa and to the thousands of women and men who made this a truly magical experience. I would also like to thank all the volunteers who gave up all their time to help us along the way – you are all true heroes. " Katy Quail

" I just wanted to say a huge thank you to all the volunteers who were working on the night of June 14th and Morning of the 15th. The encouragement was fantastic, I was feeling very nervous while we were all waiting in the Pink Palace wondering what to expect and if I could finish it or not, 26.2 miles is a long way when you are over-weight and probably under-trained!!. However the clapping and cheering and words of encouragement was just what I needed. I kept plodding on and my mum and I walked through the finish line at 9.31am! I was very proud of myself and came away with only one blister which is not bad really! So thank you all again for arranging such a fantastic night, there are two girls who I work with that have been diagnosed with breast cancer this year both of whom are under 35, one has had to have a mastectomy. I had them both in my mind on the way round and also the fact that my boss had already given me my £20 sponsorship money and I was not prepared to fail the walk and give him his money back!!! Thanks again " Helen Platt

Well deserved medals for all

" Just wanted to say a massive thankyou for all the volunteers who made the walk so much easier with all their encouraging words and support. It was my first Moonwalk and I was doing it on my own and found it very difficult to keep motivated. Had it not been for the volunteers I would have felt very lonely as I was walking on my own and it seemed as if nobody wanted to chat with me along the way. However even when I found it hard to continue the kind words of encouragement from the volunteers kept me putting one foot in front of the other and finally crossed the finish line. So THANKYOU volunteers you help us walkers in so many ways standing in the cold with a warm smile and kind words to each and every one of us. I hope to see you again next year but next time I'll try to encourage some friends to do it with me! " Kelly Harris

" Hey, I just want to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who helped Organise Walk The Walk from Nina, to the Volunteers and everyone who Painted the Town Pink. This is the first time that I have taken part in a Walk the Walk event and I can tell you now, it won't be the last. The atmosphere from when I arrived at The Meadows to when I got back after 26.2 miles was absolutely 'electric'. What an awesome event and awesome atmosphere. I completed the walk in 6 hrs 52 mins and was delighted with my time, but most of all, just how much support was given through out the night by the fantastic Marshalls. Easy to spot, always there to help and they offered so much encouragement. It can't of been easy being out all night like that. The medal was certainly worth the walk and the wait. Probably the best organised event I've been to for a long time. Well Done. Also a big thank you to my fiancée Dave who was a Marshall at Mile 8. That hug & kiss kept me going babe xx " Wendy Clark
