Walking is a low impact sport which means you have a much lower chance of injuring yourself. Being one of the few sports that actually uses the whole body, the more you do, the more you will improve your muscle tone and the stronger you will become.
Combining a healthy diet and walking is a guaranteed way to lose weight, get good muscle tone and keep that way! Tests have shown that if you walk a minimum of 4 times a week at a pace that increases your heart rate and for a minimum of 45 minutes, you could loose up to 18lb (8kilos) in weight without even changing your diet. Power Walk at approximately 4.5 miles an hour and mile for mile you will burn the same energy as a runner. Of course whilst you’re getting into shape, you will be developing greater core stability, strengthening your lower back, improving your posture and as a weight bearing exercise walking can help to develop and keep strong bones which in turn will help to protect you from osteoporosis.
Regular walking will minimise bloating and reduce fluid retention. Due to the release of endorphins caused by increasing your heart rate, you will have a calmer perspective on life and feel more able to cope.
Get a walking pal and make your training walks a social event, not only will you be spending special time with your friends; you will be sharing a goal and increasing your chances of achieving it. Arrange a weekly walk and you will be amazed at how quickly you begin to look forward to it…the only difficult bit, walking fast and talking at the same time!
